Dr. Robert Schuman received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with high honors. He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Schuman completed his residency and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Cornell University Medical Center, The New York Hospital and Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He also completed training at Mt. Sinai Medical Center as a member of the Liver Transplant Team. He was a member of the full time faculty of Cornell University – New York Hospital, until he joined Affiliates in Gastroenterology in 1995.

Dr. Schuman is board certified in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is a member of numerous national societies in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is a past president of the New Jersey Gastroenterology Society. He is skilled in endoscopy and has performed thousands of colonoscopies, upper endoscopies and ERCP’s.

Dr. Schuman has received numerous honors and accolades. He has been a New Jersey monthly “Top Doc” annually since 2008. He was honored as the American Cancer Society Medical Honoree and is the 2017 American Cancer Society Humanitarian Award recipient. He has presented his research at national and international meetings in the field of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Schuman is a physician adviser for the American Cancer Society, as well as a member of the Cancer Committee at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and frequently lectures on the benefits of colon cancer screening. He was President of the Medical Staff at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and was honored as “Specialist of the Year” for his clinical skills and teaching abilities. Other accolades include the President Choice Award for the American Society of Liver Disease, “Guide to America Top Physicians” by the consumer research council of America and listed as one of the “Best Doctors” by Better Living Magazine. Dr. Schuman is a trustee at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He has provided free colon cancer screening for many patients at need in New Jersey and on Medical Mission in Virginia

Dr. Schuman is a sports enthusiast, an avid Duke basketball fan, a Michigan football fan and enjoys golf, skiing, travel and spending time with his family. Dr. Schuman sees patients at the West Orange office.
